What do we know about this scene
On August 23, 1944, Sylwester Braun "Kris" photographed the figure of Christ carrying the cross in front of the Church of the Holy Cross. The shot was taken from inside the temple towards the east; in the background you can see the ruins of tenement houses at Krakowskie Przedmieście 12 and 10. On that day, the insurgents recaptured the church from the Germans. The figure on a granite pedestal with the inscription "Sursum corda" - "Up your hearts" - was still standing at the time of the photo. On September 6, the detonation of two remotely controlled "Goliath" charges destroyed the interior and facade, and the statue fell to the pavement. The occupiers took the sculpture away; it was found near Nysa and restored to the church on July 19, 1945.
