Historical context
What do we know about this scene
Eugeniusz Lokajski's frame "Brok", later known as "Insurgent Venus", shows a young woman with a mirror on Złota Street covered with rubble. In the background you can see a barricade and a small white and red sign near the photographed person's collar. Her identity, function in the insurgent structures and the exact day the photo was taken have not been reliably established; safe dating is August 1944. She should not be identified with Bożena Grabowska "Magda", whom Lokajski photographed in another scene. The popular explanation that the heroine was checking after the gunfire to see if she was injured remains an interpretation of the gesture, not a fact resulting from the frame.
